PASSPORT FUGITIVE HELD: The city police arrested Muhammad Shameemuddin alias Shakeel, the kingpin of the human smuggling racket, at Mumbai international airport on Thursday morning. City Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh said that sleuths of the East Zone Task Force, acting on a tip off, arrested him soon after he landed from Malaysia.
Shakeel is believed to have colluded with broker Mohammed Mazaruddin alias Rasheed and others to arrange fake documents to help people slip into the United States and other foreign countries.
He is also wanted in a passport racket case registered in 2003 at Saifabad police station and had unsuccessfully contested the recent Legislative Council polls from Nizamabad with the support of Telugu Desam.
Rasheed and one Prakash Reddy of Himayatnagar were arrested after the lid was blown off the human trafficking scam but Shakeel had evaded the police dragnet. His name surfaced after the arrest of BJP MP Babu Katara at the Delhi airport on April 19 while he was trying to board a flight to Canada with a woman pretending to be his wife. This newspaper exposed Shakeel’s involvement in the passport scam on April 28 and and three days later he fled to Malaysia. TRS MLAs Kasipet Lingaiah and Soyam Bapu Rao were also arrested in connection with the in human smuggling racket. Rasheed, who surrendered before the police, confessed that he was just a ‘tool’ in the racket run by Shakeel. Sources said Shakeel told the police that Rasheed had given him the passport of TRS MP Narendra and asked him to arrange three visas to the US for a woman and two children. He reportedly admitted that Rasheed had introduced him to several politicians including Bahujan Samaj Party MP Mohammad Tahir Khan for visas.
Shakeel, is a resident of Bodhan town in Nizamabad, and had left for the US after completing his intermediate. Later he started the lucrative passport business and has a posh house in road No 11, Banjara Hills. Sources said Shakeel recently withdrew over Rs 50 lakh from a bank and asked one of his friends to bring the money to Mumbai to enable him to leave for Chicago. The city police cornered him after getting a tip off. “We have informed the Delhi police of his arrest,” said Mr Balwinder Singh.

A RARE FEMALE GENITAL DISEASE FOUND HYDERABAD: A team of city doctors has established a link between infertility and female genital tuberculosis, which is spreading fast in South India. The team has also found an easy diagnostic method to detect genital tuberculosis in women with 100 per cent accuracy. Diagnosing female genital tuberculosis is a difficult task at present and doctors have to be satisfied with ‘clinical suspicion’ based on certain symptoms. Abdominal and vaginal examinations also reveal nothing.
However, Dr Roya Rozati, Dr Sreenivasagari Roopa and Dr Cheruvu Naga Rajashwari of the department of reproductive medicine at Mahavir Hospital and Research Centre have developed a diagnostic method by identifying mycobacterium DNA through polymerase chain reaction.
They also found that genital tuberculosis was an important cause of infertility, more so in endemic zones of South India. All forms of tuberculosis including the genital version had been brought under control in India until the HIV upsurge reversed the trend in the last decade. The true epidemiology of female genital tuberculosis is still unknown because of lack of specific tests. It causes tubal obstruction and dysfunction and ovulatory failure.
In India, female genital tuberculosis mostly affects women between the ages of 18 and 38.
“Usual diagnostic methods don’t work and laparascopy can cause bowel injury,” says Dr Rozati. “Surgery can sometimes activate silent infection.” Only histopathological evidence through biopsy of premenstrual endometrial tissue or demonstration of tubercle bacilli in culture of menstrual blood gives the correct diagnosis, she adds.
'D-GANG' ACTIVE IN HYDERABAD: Dawood Ibrahim’s D-gang is spreading its tentacles in the city again. The gang which was dormant for the past few years has revived its activities. The gang is also reportedly looking for new recruits to spread its ‘business’. For the purpose, the existing gang members are looking out for unemployed youth in the city. The police is worried over the nexus between the much-feared D-gang and the local gangsters. “The gang went underground two years back. Off late, three to four incidents involving the D-gang have come to our notice. We also have information that the gang is working with the help of local gangsters,” said a senior police official. The local gangsters are reportedly receiving Rs 20,000 every time they help the D-company with the addresses of local big shots.
He added that the D- company is eyeing the city for extortions, especially from the businessmen. The members of the gang are making threatening calls to their targets after collecting their contact details through local gangsters. Apart from the D company, the police suspect that aides of Chota Rajan have also targeted the city. The task force cops arrested an alleged D-gang member a few days back. Ali-Bin-Sayeed Aiffian alias Ali Baba allegedly threatened M. A. Khan and several others demanding them money more than Rs 5 crore. However, police was shocked after he reportedly confessed that he had orders to shoot M. A. Khan, but did not have the weapon for the purpose. “With the arrests of the D-company members in the recent past we could manage to secure information of their activities in the city. This is also helping us keep a tab on them,” said V. B. Kamalasan Reddy, deputy commissioner of police, Task Force.
